The U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass legislation authorizing tariffs of up to 100% on imports of Russian crude and refined oil, intensifying economic pressure on Moscow.

Washington – The United States House of Representatives approved a bill that would allow the Treasury Department to levy tariffs of up to 100 percent on Russian crude and refined oil imports. The measure, passed by a majority vote, is part of a broader strategy to tighten economic sanctions on Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine.

The legislation empowers the administration to impose a full‑scale tariff on any Russian petroleum product that enters the U.S. market, effectively making such imports prohibitively expensive. Lawmakers said the step is intended to curtail Russia’s oil revenue, which has been used to fund its military operations.

If the bill clears the Senate and receives presidential assent, the new tariff regime could reshape global oil trade flows, as buyers look for alternative sources to avoid the punitive duty. Analysts note that while the policy may pressure Russia, it could also raise fuel prices in markets that rely on Russian oil.

The House version now moves to the Senate for consideration, where it is expected to face scrutiny over its potential impact on energy prices and international trade relations.
