Local authorities were alerted and rescue teams arrived within minutes, but the strong flow hampered their efforts. Despite attempts to retrieve the bodies, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have opened a routine inquiry to determine whether any safety measures along the riverbank were lacking. The incident has prompted calls for better signage and barriers near popular cycling routes.
