The Supreme Court has ruled that only certified eco‑friendly firecrackers can be used in Delhi during Diwali celebrations.
The Supreme Court of India has issued an order permitting the use of only certified "green" firecrackers in Delhi for the upcoming Diwali festivities. The ruling comes after several petitions highlighted the city's severe air‑quality concerns and the need to curb pollution from traditional fireworks.
Under the order, manufacturers and sellers must obtain certification that their crackers meet stipulated emission standards before they can be sold or ignited in the capital. Authorities will conduct spot checks to ensure compliance, and any non‑certified products will be confiscated.
Delhi's municipal bodies have welcomed the decision, noting that it balances the cultural importance of Diwali celebrations with public health imperatives. Residents are expected to see a reduction in particulate matter and sulfur dioxide levels compared with previous years when unrestricted fireworks were common.
The court has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to monitor air quality throughout the festival and report any violations. The decision is effective for this year's Diwali and may set a precedent for other states seeking to regulate fireworks.
Stakeholders, including firecracker manufacturers, have been urged to accelerate the certification process to meet the festival deadline, ensuring that celebrations proceed without legal hindrance.
