The access portals to the holy shrine of Shri Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand have been closed for the winter season.

The pilgrimage portals leading to Shri Hemkund Sahib, the revered Sikh shrine perched in the high Himalayas of Uttarakhand, have been officially closed for the winter months. Authorities cited heavy snowfall, sub‑zero temperatures and the risk of avalanches as the primary reasons for the seasonal shutdown.

Typically, the shrine opens for devotees from late May to early November, when the trekking routes are safe and the weather is conducive. This year, the closure was announced ahead of the onset of winter to ensure the safety of pilgrims and staff stationed at the site.

The Uttarakhand tourism department has urged pilgrims to plan visits during the approved window and to stay updated on any changes to the schedule. Local vendors and nearby accommodations are expected to see a dip in footfall until the portals reopen in spring.

Despite the temporary restriction, the shrine’s management assures that the sanctum will continue regular religious rites, and the infrastructure will be maintained throughout the harsh season.
