The National Highways Authority of India announced a plan to desilt major rivers in Bihar and recycle the dredged material for constructing highways, aiming to improve flood management and road infrastructure simultaneously.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled a dual‑benefit initiative to clear silt from several rivers flowing through Bihar. Under the scheme, the excavated material will be processed and used as raw aggregate for upcoming highway projects in the state.

By removing excess sediment, the project seeks to enhance the rivers' carrying capacity and reduce the risk of seasonal flooding that often disrupts local communities and agriculture. At the same time, the recycled soil will lower the cost of road construction and lessen dependence on virgin aggregates.

NHAI officials said the plan will be coordinated with the Bihar state government and relevant environmental agencies to ensure compliance with ecological standards. Detailed feasibility studies are underway, with pilot works expected to commence later this year on the Ganga and its tributaries.

If successful, the approach could become a model for other flood‑prone regions, linking river management with infrastructure development in a cost‑effective manner.
