The NMC approved an additional 318 postgraduate medical seats in Odisha, raising the state’s total to 938.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has cleared 318 new postgraduate (PG) medical seats for colleges in Odisha, taking the state's overall PG capacity to 938 seats. The decision was announced in a recent circular issued by the regulator, which oversees medical education standards across India.
The additional seats are expected to be distributed among existing government and private medical institutions in the state, covering a range of specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics‑gynecology. By expanding the number of training positions, the NMC aims to address the persistent shortage of specialist doctors in Odisha's public health system.
State health officials have welcomed the move, noting that a larger pool of qualified specialists could improve patient care in rural and underserved areas. The new seats will be filled through the usual NEET‑PG entrance examination, with admissions slated to begin in the upcoming academic session.
