The Jan Dhan Yojana in Madhya Pradesh now has over 47.6 million accounts, but about 18.2 million are either dormant or hold a zero balance, with an average deposit of ₹4,182 per account.

Madhya Pradesh’s financial inclusion drive under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has registered more than 47.6 million bank accounts, according to the latest data released by the state government. The figure reflects a steady rise in enrollment since the scheme’s launch, aiming to provide basic banking services to the unbanked population.

However, the same data shows that roughly 18.2 million of these accounts are either inactive or carry a zero balance. Analysts note that dormant accounts can limit the effectiveness of the scheme, as they do not contribute to financial activity or credit assessment.

The average balance across all active Jan Dhan accounts in the state stands at ₹4,182, indicating modest savings among account holders. State officials have urged banks to encourage regular deposits and to conduct outreach programs that can reactivate dormant accounts.

The government plans to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and introduce incentives for account holders who maintain regular transactions, hoping to boost financial inclusion and improve the overall health of the Jan Dhan portfolio in Madhya Pradesh.
