The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 2,814 crore programme aimed at expanding domestic processing capacity for critical minerals.

New Delhi – The Union Cabinet gave its nod to a Rs 2,814 crore initiative designed to strengthen India's ability to process critical minerals within the country. The scheme is expected to fund the establishment of new processing units and upgrade existing facilities, thereby reducing reliance on imports for strategic raw materials. Officials said the programme aligns with the government's broader push to secure supply chains for minerals essential to defence, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. While detailed implementation guidelines are being drafted, the approval signals a clear policy focus on building a self‑reliant mineral ecosystem. The funding will be released in phases, with monitoring mechanisms to ensure timely progress.
