The Union government has sanctioned the distribution of kerosene through the Public Distribution System for 60 days across 21 states, imposing a 5,000‑liter storage limit per household to address the ongoing LPG crisis.

On Thursday, the Union Cabinet approved a temporary measure to distribute kerosene through the Public Distribution System (PDS) in 21 states for a period of 60 days. The decision aims to mitigate the nationwide shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) that has left many households without a reliable cooking fuel.

Under the scheme, households that qualify for PDS can receive kerosene at subsidised rates. The government has set a maximum storage capacity of 5,000 litres per household to ensure that the supply does not exceed the intended emergency use and to prevent hoarding.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas will coordinate with state authorities to facilitate the distribution, while the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution will monitor compliance with the storage limit. The measure is expected to provide a stopgap solution until LPG supplies stabilize.

Officials have indicated that the policy will be reviewed after the 60‑day period, with the possibility of extending or scaling back the distribution based on market conditions and the availability of LPG.
