The India Meteorological Department has placed Maharashtra under a yellow heatwave alert, warning of rising temperatures and urging residents to stay hydrated with traditional cooling drinks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for a heatwave across the state of Maharashtra, signalling an elevated risk of unusually high temperatures in the coming days. The alert covers the entire state and is intended to prompt precautionary measures among the public and authorities.

Under a yellow alert, maximum temperatures are expected to climb above normal levels, with many districts likely to record readings of 40°C or higher. Health officials have advised people to limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear light clothing, and maintain adequate fluid intake.

To mitigate the impact of the heat, the department highlighted seven traditional Indian cooling drinks that can help replenish fluids and electrolytes. These include buttermilk (chaas), aam panna, jal‑jeera, coconut water, sugarcane juice, rose sherbet and lemon‑mint water, all of which are widely consumed during summer.

Authorities also warned that vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers should take extra care, seek shade, and consult medical services promptly if they experience signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration.
