Indian and European Union officials say the pending free trade pact could be finalized by 2026 and will significantly reshape bilateral commerce.

New Delhi – Senior officials from India and the European Union have indicated that negotiations on a comprehensive free trade agreement are on track to conclude by 2026. The two sides described the prospective pact as a "game‑changer" for trade, investment and services between the world's fifth‑largest economy and the EU bloc.

The agreement aims to eliminate tariffs on a wide range of goods, simplify customs procedures, and open up sectors such as pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and digital services. Both parties expect the deal to boost bilateral trade volumes, which already exceed €100 billion annually, and to create new opportunities for Indian exporters and EU investors.

While the timeline suggests a multi‑year negotiation process, officials said that key issues – including market‑access for agricultural products and regulatory alignment – have moved forward steadily. The next steps involve detailed technical talks before a formal signing ceremony, likely to be hosted by the Indian Prime Minister and the EU Commission President.

If concluded as projected, the pact would mark the first comprehensive free trade agreement between the EU and a major Asian economy, potentially setting a template for future deals with the region.
