Heavy monsoon rains across Uttar Pradesh have claimed 56 lives and damaged more than 1,000 houses, prompting criticism from opposition parties.
Heavy monsoon showers swept through several districts of Uttar Pradesh, raising the death toll to 56 and leaving 1,021 houses either partially or completely damaged. Local officials said the floods were triggered by unusually intense rainfall that began early this week and quickly overwhelmed drainage systems.
Rescue teams from the state disaster response force, along with the National Disaster Response Force, were deployed to the worst‑hit areas to evacuate families and provide emergency relief. Temporary shelters have been set up, and the state government announced an immediate release of funds for food, medical aid and repair of damaged infrastructure.
The opposition seized on the tragedy, accusing the state administration of failing to anticipate the deluge and of inadequate preparedness. Party leaders held press briefings demanding a transparent inquiry and a review of the state's flood‑management policies.
Authorities, while acknowledging the criticism, said they are monitoring the situation closely and will continue to mobilise resources until the affected communities receive full assistance.
