The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Kolkata as the low‑pressure system named ‘Arnab’ moves across the Bay of Bengal, bringing significant rainfall but no cyclone‑strength winds.
Officials warned that the system is expected to produce intermittent showers and localized flooding in parts of the city over the next 24 hours, with rainfall accumulations of up to 50 mm in some areas.
While the IMD clarified that ‘Arnab’ lacks the sustained wind speeds required for a cyclone classification, residents have been advised to stay vigilant, avoid water‑logged roads and follow any further advisories from local authorities.
The alert will remain in force until the system moves away, after which normal weather conditions are expected to resume.
