Keonjhar residents say that rapid erosion of the Baitarani Riverbank is weakening the embankment and could lead to serious flooding.
The Baitarani River, which flows through Keonjhar district in Odisha, is experiencing accelerated bank erosion, according to local residents. Villagers report that sections of the riverbank have collapsed, exposing the waterway and reducing the protective capacity of existing embankments.
Authorities from the district disaster management cell have been alerted to the situation and are monitoring water levels closely. Preliminary assessments suggest that if the erosion continues unchecked, the weakened banks could give way during the upcoming monsoon, raising the risk of flash floods in low‑lying habitations.
Residents have begun informal measures such as sandbagging and reinforcing vulnerable stretches with locally sourced materials. However, they stress the need for a coordinated engineering response to stabilise the riverbank before the monsoon season intensifies.
The district administration has promised to dispatch a technical team to conduct a detailed survey and recommend remedial works. In the meantime, community leaders are urging households in the affected zones to stay prepared and follow any evacuation advisories.
The situation underscores growing concerns across Odisha about riverbank erosion and its potential to exacerbate flood hazards in the state's interior districts.
