The Andhra Pradesh government announced a Rs 200 crore compensation package to support families displaced by the Veligonda irrigation project.
The state cabinet approved a financial relief of Rs 200 crore for households that were relocated due to the Veligonda irrigation and hydro‑electric project. The compensation is intended to cover rehabilitation costs, loss of livelihood and other hardships faced by the displaced families.
Officials said the funds will be disbursed in phases through the district revenue offices, with priority given to the most vulnerable households. The scheme also includes provisions for skill‑development training and assistance in acquiring new agricultural land where feasible.
The Veligonda project, aimed at enhancing water supply and power generation in the Rayalaseema region, has long been contested by locals over environmental and social impacts. The new compensation package is being presented as a step toward addressing those concerns while keeping the project on schedule.
State Minister for Rural Development, who oversaw the announcement, urged beneficiaries to register promptly and cooperate with the implementation teams to ensure transparent and timely payouts.
