The West Bengal government has named a 2012‑batch Indian Administrative Service officer as the new director of the state's census operations.
Kolkata, Oct 20 (NorthBlockSouthBlock) – The West Bengal administration announced today that an officer of the 2012 Indian Administrative Service batch will take charge as the new Census Director. The appointment was communicated through an official press release issued by the state’s Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms.
The newly appointed director will be responsible for overseeing the planning, execution and data management of the upcoming decennial census in West Bengal. The role includes coordinating with the central Ministry of Home Affairs, supervising field operations across districts, and ensuring that the census adheres to the latest methodological guidelines.
The decision comes as the state prepares for the delayed 2021 Census, which has been postponed due to the pandemic. Officials expect the new director to streamline data collection, integrate digital tools, and address logistical challenges in both urban and rural areas.
State officials said the officer’s prior experience in district administration and large‑scale project management makes them well‑suited to lead the census effort. The appointment is effective immediately, with the director reporting directly to the Chief Secretary and the Chief Minister’s Office.
The move underscores the government’s focus on accurate demographic data to inform policy planning, resource allocation and development programmes across West Bengal.
