The Government of India has appointed a former Jammu and Kashmir cadre Indian Forest Service officer as the new Director General of the Forest Survey of India, according to Kashmir Life.

A senior officer who previously served in the Jammu and Kashmir cadre of the Indian Forest Service has been elevated to the post of Director General of the Forest Survey of India (FSI). The appointment was announced by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and reported by Kashmir Life.

The Director General heads FSI, the apex agency responsible for assessing the country’s forest cover, biodiversity and carbon stock. The role involves overseeing large‑scale satellite mapping, field surveys and the preparation of annual forest reports that guide policy and conservation efforts.

The newly appointed officer brings extensive experience from managing forest resources in the mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, having held key positions in state forest administration. His background is expected to strengthen coordination between the central survey agency and state forest departments.

The move reflects the government’s focus on reinforcing technical expertise at the helm of institutions that monitor India’s natural capital, especially as the nation prepares for upcoming climate reporting cycles.
