Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will inaugurate the maiden international cargo shipment departing from Dibrugarh, Assam, marking a new milestone for the region's trade connectivity.
Dibrugarh, Assam – Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is set to flag off the first ever international cargo vessel scheduled to leave the city’s port today. The ceremony will be held at the newly upgraded cargo terminal, underscoring the government’s push to expand Assam’s role in global trade.
The launch marks the inaugural outbound cargo movement that will connect the northeastern region with overseas markets. Officials say the service is expected to streamline the export of tea, oil, and other regional products, reducing reliance on trans‑shipment routes through other Indian ports.
Government sources indicated that the new route could attract further investment in logistics infrastructure and create employment opportunities in the hinterland. The ministry plans to monitor cargo volumes closely and explore additional international links in the coming months.
