A paddy‑laden truck lost control on Chinaur Road in Gwalior and struck worshippers entering Shitala Mata Temple, killing 14 and injuring 29.
On the night of Saturday and Sunday, a heavy truck laden with paddy lost control on the downhill stretch of Chinaur Road in Gwalior and collided with a crowd of devotees entering the Shitala Mata Temple. The vehicle struck the temple’s entrance gate, crushing worshippers who were on their way to view the deity.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and recovered fourteen bodies while rescuing twenty‑nine injured persons, many of whom were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of serious injuries.
Police and fire officials have cordoned off the area and are conducting a preliminary investigation into the cause of the truck’s runaway, including possible brake failure or driver error.
The incident has prompted local authorities to review traffic management around the temple premises, especially during weekend evenings when large numbers of pilgrims gather.
