A new online trend, dubbed the "cockroach movement", has taken social media by storm in India. The campaign seeks to symbolically undermine the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invincibility, a term often used by his supporters to describe his political resilience.
Participants in the movement release cockroaches in public spaces and share videos of the act on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram. The choice of the cockroach—a creature that thrives in adverse conditions—has been highlighted by activists as a metaphor for resilience and an unyielding spirit.
The movement has sparked conversations across political forums and news outlets, with commentators debating the role of satire and protest in contemporary Indian politics. While the campaign is largely grassroots, it has attracted attention from a wide audience.
No official response has been issued by the government or the Prime Minister’s office regarding the movement, and its future trajectory remains uncertain.
