The state of Tripura urged the National Fisheries Board to adopt measures that would make it self‑sufficient in fish production.

At a recent session of the National Fisheries Board, officials from Tripura presented a detailed proposal aimed at achieving self‑sufficiency in fish production for the state. The delegation highlighted the strategic importance of fisheries for Tripura’s economy and food security, and called for targeted policy support and investment.
Tripura currently produces a modest share of its fish demand, relying heavily on imports from neighboring states. Constraints such as limited hatchery capacity, inadequate cold‑chain infrastructure, and fragmented supply chains were cited as key bottlenecks.
The state’s plan calls for expanding hatcheries, upgrading processing facilities, and strengthening market linkages. If implemented, officials say the measures could raise local fish output by up to 30 percent within three years, reducing dependence on external supplies and generating employment in rural areas.
The National Fisheries Board has pledged to review the proposal and coordinate with central schemes to channel funding and technical assistance. A follow‑up meeting is scheduled for early next month to finalize actionable steps.
