Three under‑age girls drowned while taking a Kartik holy dip in the Kunwari River at Muraina, Madhya Pradesh; two of them were sisters.
Muraina in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a tragic incident on the auspicious day of Kartik Snan when three minor girls entered the Kunwari River for a ritual dip and were swept away by the current. The girls, all under the age of eighteen, were reported missing within minutes, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) dispatched a rescue team to the site. Rescuers managed to pull the three bodies from the river, but despite swift medical attention, none survived. Among the deceased were two sisters, whose loss has deepened the community's grief.
Local police have opened a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the drowning, focusing on river conditions and safety measures during the festival. Officials have urged residents to exercise caution during future religious immersions, especially in fast‑moving waters.
The incident has sparked calls for better crowd management and the provision of safety equipment at popular bathing spots during religious events. The families of the victims have been informed, and a condolence ceremony is being organized by community leaders.
The tragedy underscores the need for heightened vigilance during mass religious gatherings, where the combination of large crowds and natural water bodies can pose serious risks.
