Telangana's Coal Reserves Dip Below Critical Levels, Raising Power Crisis Fears

Coal stockpiles in Telangana have fallen below the minimum required for power generation, prompting concerns of a looming electricity shortage.

State power officials said that the latest inventory shows coal reserves at thermal plants have slipped beneath the threshold needed for uninterrupted generation. The shortfall threatens to curtail output at several major stations, potentially leading to scheduled load‑shedding across the region.

Industry analysts note that the deficit stems from delayed deliveries and reduced imports, compounding the challenges faced by the Telangana Power Development Corporation. The utility has already begun contingency planning, including the mobilisation of alternative fuel sources and the prioritisation of critical infrastructure.

The Telangana government has been urged to expedite procurement and explore short‑term agreements with coal suppliers to stabilise the supply chain. Meanwhile, consumers are advised to conserve electricity as authorities monitor the situation closely.

The report was first highlighted by Telangana Today, which flagged the declining coal stocks as a key indicator of a possible power crunch in the coming weeks.
