The Tamil Nadu government has forwarded a private university bill that lowers the mandatory land requirement to the President for final approval.
The Tamil Nadu state cabinet approved a private‑university bill that relaxes the land‑holding criteria previously imposed on new institutions. The amendment trims the compulsory acreage, a move intended to encourage more private players to set up campuses in the state.
Under the new provisions, prospective private universities will need to secure a smaller parcel of land before they can obtain a licence, a change officials say will reduce entry barriers without compromising academic standards.
Having cleared the legislative hurdle, the bill was transmitted to the President of India for constitutional assent. Once the President signs off, the amendment will be gazetted and become enforceable.
Education analysts view the step as a boost to Tamil Nadu’s higher‑education capacity, though some caution that regulatory oversight must keep pace with the expected increase in institutions.
