The Supreme Court will hear a petition today concerning municipal action against 62,500 commercial establishments operating in residential zones of Bhopal, along with objections raised by local residents.

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear a petition that challenges the Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s decision to curb commercial activities in residential neighbourhoods. The petition lists roughly 62,500 establishments that the municipality claims are operating illegally within housing zones.

The municipal authority has prepared a detailed action report, citing violations of zoning regulations, increased traffic, noise pollution, and strain on local infrastructure. It seeks the Court’s endorsement to enforce the removal or relocation of these businesses and to impose penalties on non‑compliant owners.

Representatives of resident welfare associations will also appear, arguing that the unchecked proliferation of shops and workshops has deteriorated the quality of life for locals. They demand swift enforcement and compensation for losses incurred due to the illegal setups.

Legal experts note that the case could set a precedent for how Indian cities balance commercial growth with residential welfare, especially in rapidly urbanising regions.
