The Supreme Court has directed the use of electronic surveillance systems on national highways to curb illegal parking, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety.

The Supreme Court of India, responding to growing concerns over traffic congestion caused by vehicles illegally parked on highways, issued a directive today mandating the deployment of electronic surveillance.

The order calls for installation of cameras and sensor‑based monitoring systems along identified stretches of national highways, enabling real‑time detection of parked vehicles and swift removal by authorities.

The court emphasized that illegal parking not only hampers the movement of emergency services but also raises the risk of accidents. It instructed the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to coordinate with state traffic police and technology providers to implement the system within a stipulated timeframe.

The directive also seeks periodic reporting to the bench on compliance and effectiveness, signalling a judicial push towards leveraging technology for road safety.
