The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Union government and the Election Commission in response to a petition challenging the State Intervention Report (SIR) in Maharashtra.

The Supreme Court of India has formally issued a notice to both the Union government and the Election Commission of India after receiving a petition that contests the State Intervention Report (SIR) filed for Maharashtra. The court’s order directs the two authorities to submit their responses on the legal merits of the challenge.

The SIR, a document used to assess the need for state intervention in the conduct of elections, has been a focal point in recent electoral debates in Maharashtra. Petitioners argue that the report was prepared without adhering to procedural norms, potentially affecting the fairness of upcoming polls.

By granting the notice, the apex court has signalled that it will scrutinise the arguments presented by both the petitioners and the respondents before deciding on any further relief. The Centre and the Election Commission are expected to file their replies within the timeframe stipulated by the court.
