Environmental activists and student leaders clashed with authorities at Jai Narayan Vyas University in Jodhpur when a 20‑year‑old tree was slated for removal, leading to the arrest of a student leader.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan – Police detained a student leader on Thursday after he joined a protest against the felling of a tree that had stood for more than two decades in the central office area of Jai Narayan Vyas University. Environmental activists and student representatives gathered to block the removal, citing concerns over campus greenery and ecological impact.

According to eyewitnesses, the university administration had scheduled the cutting as part of a landscaping plan. Protesters formed a human chain around the trunk, and tensions rose when police arrived to enforce the order. The student leader was physically lifted by officers and escorted to the nearby police station for questioning.

Local media reported that no injuries were sustained, but the incident has sparked debate over the balance between development projects and environmental preservation on educational campuses. University officials have not yet commented on the arrest or the future of the tree removal project.

The detained individual is expected to be released on bail, while the protest is likely to continue until the university clarifies its stance on the issue.
