Stubble burning across Punjab has driven the Air Quality Index in Khanna to 256, a hazardous level, prompting health warnings for residents.

Stubble burning in Punjab’s agricultural fields has caused a sharp rise in particulate matter, pushing the Air Quality Index in Khanna to 256, a level classified as hazardous.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board said the AQI, which had been in the moderate range earlier this week, spiked after farmers ignited residual crop stalks in several districts.

Health officials have warned vulnerable groups – children, the elderly and those with respiratory ailments – to limit outdoor activities and wear masks until the air improves.

The state government reiterated its appeal to farmers to adopt alternative residue‑management practices and announced the deployment of additional air‑monitoring stations in affected areas.

The episode highlights the recurring seasonal challenge of stubble burning in northern India, which routinely drives up pollution levels across the region.
