The northeastern state of Meghalaya recorded its highest temperature of the year since 1901, while monsoon rainfall fell sharply, raising concerns about water resources.
The northeastern state of Meghalaya has registered its warmest year on record since 1901, according to the latest meteorological data released by the India Meteorological Department.
Average temperatures across the state rose by 1.8°C above the long‑term mean, with peak highs reaching 32°C in the plains.
At the same time, monsoon rainfall fell sharply, with total precipitation during the June‑September period dropping 25% compared to the 30‑year average.
The combination of higher temperatures and reduced rainfall is raising concerns among scientists and local authorities about water availability for agriculture and hydroelectric projects.
