The Sri Lankan navy detained nine fishermen from Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, and seized their boat while operating near the island of Neduntheevu, officials said.

The Sri Lankan navy announced that it had apprehended nine fishermen from the Indian town of Rameswaram and confiscated their vessel as they were operating close to the island of Neduntheevu in the northern part of the country.

According to the navy, the fishermen were intercepted in international waters near the island and were taken into custody for further questioning. Their boat was seized as part of the operation.

The incident highlights the recurring disputes over fishing rights in the waters shared by India and Sri Lanka, where both nations have periodically raised concerns about illegal fishing and the enforcement of maritime boundaries.

Indian authorities have not yet released an official statement, while Sri Lankan officials said the detained individuals would be dealt with in accordance with national law.

The Economic Times reported the development, noting that the case could add to diplomatic dialogues between the two neighboring countries on fisheries management.
