The intensive care unit at Dhar district hospital in Madhya Pradesh lacks neurologists, cardiologists and nephrologists, prompting the transfer of around 90 critical patients to Indore each month.
The intensive care unit (ICU) at Dhar district hospital in Madhya Pradesh is currently operating without specialist doctors in neurology, cardiology and nephrology. This gap in expertise has left the unit unable to manage complex cases that require advanced medical intervention.
As a result, approximately 90 patients with serious conditions are being referred to tertiary care hospitals in Indore every month. The transfers involve critical cases that could otherwise be treated locally if specialist support were available.
Health officials in the state have acknowledged the shortage and indicated that steps are being taken to address the staffing deficit. They are reportedly reviewing recruitment processes and exploring temporary deputations of specialists from nearby medical colleges.
The lack of specialists not only increases the burden on patients and their families but also adds pressure on Indore’s tertiary facilities, which must accommodate the influx of referrals from surrounding districts.
Authorities have urged the central and state health ministries to expedite the allocation of specialist resources to district hospitals, aiming to reduce patient displacement and improve emergency care outcomes in the region.
