The sensors, placed at strategic points around the lakes, will continuously record data on water volume, temperature and pressure, allowing scientists to model meltwater flow and predict outburst events.
Officials say the new system will provide early warning to downstream communities and help in planning mitigation measures for future glacial lake outburst floods.
A spokesperson for the state’s Department of Environment noted that the initiative is part of a larger effort to safeguard Sikkim’s more than 400 glacial lakes from climate‑induced risks.
