The Indian government has launched a ₹2,276‑crore project to enlarge Deendayal Port in Gujarat, aiming to boost cargo capacity and trade.
The Ministry of Shipping announced that construction work on a major expansion of Deendayal Port in Gujarat has begun, with an investment of ₹2,276 crore (approximately $274 million). The project is part of the government's Sagarmala initiative to modernise India's maritime infrastructure.
The expansion will add two new berths, deepen the channel to a draft of 16 metres, and install state‑of‑the‑art cargo handling equipment. The upgraded facilities are expected to raise the port’s annual throughput from the current 30 million tonnes to about 45 million tonnes.
Completion is slated for 2028, and the development is projected to generate several thousand direct and indirect jobs, while enhancing export‑import logistics for the western region. Funding is being provided through a mix of central government allocations and private‑sector participation.
The contract has been awarded to a consortium led by Larsen & Toubro and the Gujarat Maritime Board, which will oversee civil works, dredging and equipment installation.
