Earlier this week, Ayush Chopra, who co‑owns a restaurant in Delhi's Connaught Place, approached the Delhi High Court with a petition aimed at curbing unauthorised protests within the commercial complex. The filing seeks a directive that authorities refuse permission for any demonstration or crowd gathering that is not officially sanctioned.
Chopra argues that frequent, unsanctioned rallies have disrupted foot traffic, leading to a measurable decline in sales for his establishment and other nearby businesses. He requests that the court not only block such gatherings but also award compensation for the financial losses incurred.
Connaught Place, a premier shopping and business district, regularly witnesses political rallies and public demonstrations, which, while constitutionally protected, have increasingly been blamed for hampering commercial activity. The petition adds to a broader debate over balancing the right to protest with the economic interests of merchants in high‑traffic zones.
The Delhi High Court has not yet issued a ruling on the matter, and the case is expected to be heard in the coming weeks, with both civic authorities and business groups monitoring the outcome closely.
