The Punjab government said the total count of stubble‑burning incidents rose to 1,612, with 500 cases reported in the last three days.
Punjab's agricultural department announced that the tally of stubble‑burning incidents across the state has reached 1,612, after 500 fresh cases were recorded in the preceding 72 hours. The surge underscores the seasonal practice of clearing post‑harvest residue before sowing the next crop.
Authorities have warned that such open‑air burning releases large quantities of particulate matter, aggravating the region's air‑quality challenges, especially during the winter months.
State officials said monitoring teams are on the ground, using satellite imagery and field patrols to identify violations and issue notices. The department is also urging farmers to adopt mechanised residue management solutions, such as happy seeders and balers, to curb future incidents.
