Punjab minister Harpal Cheema alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has turned the Enforcement Directorate into a political tool, following recent raids in the state.
Punjab minister Harpal Cheema, a member of the state cabinet, said on Thursday that the Enforcement Directorate is being used as a weapon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a series of raids across the state targeting alleged financial irregularities.
He made the remarks during a press conference in Chandigarh, condemning what he described as politically motivated investigations and urging the Centre to respect federal principles.
The ED raids, conducted over the past week, involved searches at several commercial premises and residences linked to individuals associated with political figures, though no arrests have been reported so far.
A spokesperson for the Enforcement Directorate declined to comment on the minister's accusations, reiterating that the agency operates independently based on evidence.
Opposition leaders in Punjab have echoed Cheema's concerns, calling for a parliamentary debate on the alleged misuse of investigative agencies.
