A majority of Indian American voters expressed opposition to former President Donald Trump, citing concerns over his domestic policies, while indicating that U.S.-India relations were not a decisive factor.

Indian Americans, a growing voting bloc in the United States, turned away from former President Donald Trump in the recent election cycle. Community surveys show that many voters were uneasy about the administration's handling of domestic issues such as the economy, healthcare and social policy.

The electorate’s disapproval was rooted primarily in concerns over Trump’s domestic agenda rather than foreign policy. Voters highlighted uncertainties around inflation, job security and immigration reforms as key factors influencing their choice at the ballot box.

While the United States and India maintain a strategic partnership, the diaspora indicated that bilateral ties played a secondary role in their voting decision. The New Indian Express reported that the community’s focus remained on how domestic policies would affect their daily lives in America.

Analysts note that the shift reflects a broader trend of diaspora voters prioritising local concerns over international diplomatic narratives, signalling that future candidates may need to address domestic priorities to win the Indian American vote.
