Pattinapakkam Fishers Protest Tamil Nadu Secretariat Over Land Threats

Fishers in Pattinapakkam, a coastal village in Tamil Nadu, have taken to the streets to protest the construction of a new state Secretariat nearby. The protest, which began earlier this week, centers on concerns that the project will encroach on fishing grounds and flood the area, jeopardising the community’s traditional livelihoods.

Local leaders say the Secretariat’s location is close to the village’s main fishing harbor, and that the development could alter tidal patterns and reduce fish catches. The protest has attracted support from other fishing communities in the district, who fear similar impacts.

Officials from the Tamil Nadu government have yet to respond to the fishermen’s demands. The protest remains peaceful, with demonstrators holding placards that read "Protect our land, protect our livelihood."
