Authorities in Patna have marked 98 unsafe ghats with red cloth and stepped up security checks as the Chhath festival approaches.
Patna officials have launched a focused safety drive ahead of the upcoming Chhath Mahaparv. The district magistrate, senior superintendent of police and the municipal commissioner inspected all 98 ghats along the Ganges, identifying those that pose a risk to devotees.
Ghats deemed dangerous will be draped with bright red cloths, a visual cue for pilgrims to avoid them. Additional barricades, lighting and crowd‑control personnel will be deployed at the marked sites to prevent accidents during the early‑morning and evening rituals.
The administration has also issued an advisory urging worshippers to follow designated entry points, use official ferry services and stay away from the flagged ghats. Police and municipal teams will monitor the riverbanks continuously throughout the festival period to ensure public safety.
These measures come after previous incidents of overcrowding and slips at riverfront locations during past Chhath celebrations. Officials said the red‑cloth system is a simple yet effective way to guide large crowds and minimise the risk of injuries.
