The Naga Students' Federation has urged the state government to set up an autonomous Inner Line Commission and to enforce the Border Enforcement and Facilitation Regulation more strictly.

The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) submitted a formal request to the Nagaland government, demanding the creation of an autonomous Inner Line Commission. The body, which represents student interests across the state, argues that an independent commission would ensure transparent handling of Inner Line Permit applications and reduce bureaucratic delays.

In addition to the commission, NSF called for stricter enforcement of the Border Enforcement and Facilitation Regulation (BEFR). The federation said that lax implementation has led to irregularities and undermines the purpose of the regulation, which is to monitor movement across the state’s sensitive borders.

NSF officials said the twin measures are essential for safeguarding Nagaland’s security while facilitating legitimate travel and trade. They urged the state’s Home Department to act promptly, emphasizing that the proposals have broad support among students and local communities.

The state government has not yet responded publicly to the demands. Analysts note that any move toward an autonomous commission could reshape the administration of the Inner Line Permit system, a legacy of the 1950 Inner Line Agreement.

If implemented, the proposed changes could affect thousands of residents and visitors who rely on the permit system for education, employment, and tourism across Nagaland’s border districts.
