The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a strict order requiring roughly 150 factories operating in Jaipur to hand back 2.9 hectares of land that belongs to the state forest department. The directive, delivered after a petition highlighting illegal occupation of forest land, gives the industrial units a 30‑day window to vacate the area.
The contested parcels have been used by the factories for several years, despite the land’s designation as forest reserve. Environmental groups and the forest department have long argued that the encroachment violates the Forest Conservation Act and threatens local ecology.
NGT’s order mandates that the factories restore the land to its original condition and return possession to the forest department by the end of the stipulated period. Failure to comply could attract penalties, including fines and possible closure of the units. Officials from the forest department have welcomed the ruling, saying it will help protect the remaining green cover in the rapidly urbanising city.
