Law enforcement officials in Assam confiscated almost 24 metric tonnes of areca nuts believed to have originated from Myanmar at New Bongaigaon railway station.

Police and customs officers at New Bongaigaon railway station in Assam intercepted a large consignment of areca nuts suspected to be sourced from Myanmar. The haul weighed close to 24,000 kilograms, making it one of the biggest seizures of the commodity in recent times.

According to officials, the nuts were concealed in freight containers bound for the interior of the state. Preliminary tests indicated that the product did not meet Indian phytosanitary standards, prompting the authorities to seize it under the country's plant quarantine regulations.

The seizure underscores growing concerns over illegal cross‑border trade of agricultural produce, especially items like areca nuts that are subject to strict import controls. Investigations are underway to identify the network behind the shipment and to determine whether any commercial entities were involved.

No arrests have been reported so far, and the seized nuts are being held pending further laboratory analysis and legal proceedings.
