A NASA analysis has traced the recent severe flooding in Bihar to heavy monsoon rains in neighboring Nepal, according to a statement from the state’s water resources minister.
NASA's latest satellite analysis has identified a direct link between the intense monsoon showers that fell over Nepal earlier this month and the devastating floods that later inundated large parts of Bihar. The agency used data from its Terra and Aqua platforms to track the movement of storm‑generated moisture across the Himalayas and into the Ganges basin.
State Water Resources Minister Anil Kumar Singh said the findings confirm that cross‑border weather systems are a key factor in the region’s flood risk. He urged both governments to improve real‑time data sharing and coordinated flood‑mitigation measures.
The report underscores the need for integrated river‑basin management that accounts for upstream rainfall. Experts say such scientific insights can help authorities issue earlier warnings and plan infrastructure to reduce future loss of life and property.
