A massive spoilage of onions, estimated at millions of tonnes, was discovered in a NAFED storage facility in Nashik, Maharashtra.

Nashik, Maharashtra – Officials of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) reported that a large quantity of onions, amounting to millions of tonnes, has rotted inside one of its warehouses in the city. The spoilage was identified during routine checks, revealing a thick layer of mushy onion pulp occupying the storage bays.
The incident has drawn attention to the handling and storage practices for perishable produce in the region. While the exact cause of the decay has not been disclosed, authorities are examining factors such as ventilation, temperature control, and the duration of storage.
NAFED representatives said they are conducting a thorough assessment to determine the extent of the loss and to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The agency is also coordinating with local agricultural departments to address any potential impact on the onion market.
The spoilage underscores the challenges faced by India's supply chain for horticultural commodities, especially in high‑volume hubs like Nashik, which serves as a major onion trading centre.
Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
