Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh has urged the government to draft a comprehensive plan for yak conservation and to enhance the income of yak herders in the high‑altitude regions.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced his intent to develop a detailed roadmap aimed at preserving the yak population that roams the alpine pastures of Arunachal Pradesh. The proposal seeks to balance ecological protection with the economic needs of the nomadic herders who depend on yaks for milk, meat and transport.
Khandu highlighted that the fragile high‑altitude ecosystem faces threats from climate change and unregulated grazing, which could jeopardise both biodiversity and the traditional livelihoods of tribal communities. He called for coordinated action involving the state forest department, livestock agencies and central ministries to formulate sustainable grazing practices and value‑addition initiatives.
The chief minister also stressed the importance of providing herders with better market access, veterinary services and training to improve productivity. While specific policy measures are yet to be detailed, the roadmap is expected to be presented to the state cabinet within the next few weeks.
