Microsoft's AI chief Mustafa Suleyman has voiced concerns over a Delaware proposal that would allow autonomous AI agents to operate as corporate entities, citing accountability and liability risks.

In a statement released this week, Mustafa Suleyman, the chief of Microsoft’s AI division, criticized a Delaware bill that would grant legal corporate status to autonomous AI agents. Suleyman warned that such a move could create significant accountability gaps, making it difficult to trace responsibility for decisions made by AI systems.

The proposal, which has attracted attention from both tech leaders and lawmakers, would allow AI agents to enter contracts, own property and even sue or be sued. Suleyman emphasized that without clear legal frameworks, companies could evade liability, potentially harming consumers and stakeholders.

U.S. Representative James Comer, a Republican from Tennessee, has also called for caution, pointing out that loopholes in the legislation could shield AI firms from accountability. He urged lawmakers to consider the broader implications before advancing the bill.

Microsoft’s concerns reflect a growing debate over how to regulate AI entities that can act independently of human oversight. The company’s stance underscores the need for robust legal safeguards as AI systems become more autonomous.
