The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all Himalayan states to enhance monitoring and early‑warning mechanisms against glacial lake outburst floods and avalanches.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a circular directing the governments of Himalayan states to step up early‑warning and monitoring systems for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and avalanches. The instruction calls for close coordination with state disaster‑management authorities, the Indian Meteorological Department and other relevant agencies to establish real‑time data collection, satellite imaging and community alert mechanisms. Officials said the move aims to reduce loss of life and property in vulnerable mountain regions, where climate‑induced glacial melt has increased the frequency of such hazards. The ministry will review state‑level preparedness and may allocate additional resources for equipment and training to close existing gaps in the warning infrastructure.
