A joint rally by Meitei and Naga groups has forced shops to close and public transport to be withdrawn from roads, bringing the state of Manipur to a standstill.
Manipur entered a complete shutdown on Saturday after a coordinated rally by Meitei and Naga communities. Vendors across the state were instructed to keep their shops closed, and bus, taxi and auto‑rickshaw services were pulled off the roads as a precautionary measure.
The rally, described by organizers as a peaceful demonstration of solidarity between the two ethnic groups, attracted large crowds in several districts. Local authorities deployed additional police personnel to manage the gathering and to ensure that the protest remained non‑violent.
Officials confirmed that essential services such as hospitals and emergency response units continued to operate, but commercial activity and regular commuter traffic were severely disrupted. The state administration is monitoring the situation and has urged residents to avoid non‑essential travel until normalcy returns.
No injuries or arrests have been reported so far. The rally is expected to conclude by evening, after which authorities will assess when shops and public transport can safely resume operations.
