A team of runners from Meghalaya is traveling to Arunachal Pradesh for the Tawang Marathon, a high‑altitude event that has drawn about 5,000 participants.
Meghalaya's athletics contingent is set to compete in the Tawang Marathon, a high‑altitude race held in the hill town of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. The event, known for its challenging terrain and thin air, has attracted roughly 5,000 runners from across India and neighboring countries.
The Meghalaya team, comprising both seasoned athletes and emerging talent, left their home state early this week to acclimatize to the altitude before the race. Coaches say the preparation includes hill‑training sessions in Shillong and controlled breathing exercises to cope with reduced oxygen levels.
Organisers of the Tawang Marathon expect the competition to boost tourism in the region while promoting endurance sports in the northeast. The race will cover a distance of 42.195 kilometres, winding through rugged mountain paths and offering panoramic views of the Himalayas.
Officials from the Meghalaya Sports Authority confirmed that the athletes will receive logistical support, including medical check‑ups and equipment, to ensure safety during the high‑altitude challenge. The marathon is scheduled to start on Saturday morning, with the finish line at the historic Tawang Monastery complex.
